Toxic Cosmetics

Hey Everyone,
How do I put this lightly?... there is lead in make up and other cosmetics.
This is for real-the make up and cosmetic products that many of us use are chock-full of known toxins . Sweet right? There's nothing I love more than waking up, taking a shower, and then DOUSING MY FACE IN CHEMICALS. Nothing like the smell of lead in the morning-- am I right?
Well, I'm sufficiently outraged. These types of chemicals have been shown to be detrimental to our reproductive health. Lead is commonly found in lipstick and is linked to "infertility and miscarriage. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to exposure because lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain, where it interferes with normal development. Lead does not break down in the body, but builds up over a lifetime of exposures."
Super. Recently they have found that many soaps and shampoos contain phlalates and the use of these soaps and shampoos on babies has "been linked to infertility, birth defects and other malformations of the male reproductive tract."
Last year, Minnesota banned the use of mercury in mascara. And this year a group of legislators are trying to pass a law that would require cosmetic companies to label their products if they contain known carcinogens. (SF 299). Of course cosmetic companies are going to be extremely resistant-claiming they don't want to disclose "trade secrets" etc etc. Which is ridiculous. Giving your customers cancer? What kind of business model is that?
The bill is going to be in the Senate Business, Industry and Jobs Committee soon. If your Senator is on this committee, do us all a favor and give them a call. Tell them to support SF 2999.
