03.14.08 Governor Rounds Signs Divisive Sonogram Bill Into Law

Statement from Kate Looby, South Dakota Director of Planned Parenthood

“Yesterday, Governor Rounds signed into law legislation that mandates physicians ask patients if they want to view ultrasounds prior to obtaining an abortion.

These decisions are best made between women and their doctors, not by legislators in Pierre,” Looby said. “At a time when South Dakotans are looking for concrete, common sense solutions, the Governor is mandating even more restrictions in a state that already has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country,” said Looby.

It’s another example of a small group of politicians fixated on intruding into the personal, private matters of South Dakotans rather than providing authentic solutions.

Polling released in November shows that 75% of South Dakotans surveyed support an approach that gets to the root of the problem – working together to take practical and meaningful steps to prevent unintended pregnancy thereby reducing the need for abortion.

In December, Governor Rounds turned his back on South Dakota’s low income pregnant women when he refused to expand Medicaid access for women in need.

From a public health perspective, joining the federal government to expand Medicaid in South Dakota would support the health and well-being of pregnant women in need, help ensure better outcomes for women and families living in poverty.”
